NGC Family Fun & Fitness Day

Saturday June 4th, 2011 saw the second hosting of NorthGate’s Family Fun and Fitness Day. The day comprised of five main events.

  • A 5K marathon
  • The Strong Man competition
  • The Watermelon eating race
  • The Blind Food challenge
  • A small goal football competition

Students, their siblings,  parents and members of the wider NorthGate community came out from as early as 6:30am to participate in the ‘sunrise’ 5K marathon. Safely escorted by officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, all participants were able to complete the event.

The first student to cross the finish line was Evans Joseph and the first female student to complete the race was Vongai Mlambo.

Following a tasty breakfast, participants were refueled for the Strong Man competition (which was open to girls and boys). Although many tried, there was only one champion completing the ab-roller sequence, gravel bag run, push up burnout and tire throw in 41 seconds, Illya Carrington of 6th form.

Next came the Watermelon eating race. This caused endless laughter and screams as onlookers cheered on the 30 entrants in the race.

Follwing this, participants were eager to enter the Blind Food Challenge. Although no team was able to correctly identify each of the 7 items in the box, one team did come close, correctly identifying 5. This was an astounding feat considering the fruits and vegetables in the box were quite unique.

The final event on the day was the Small Goal Football competition. There were teams of six…even all girl teams competing! Fathers and sons played together…even little brothers joined in. In the end, a team of 3rd form boys, captained by Kareem Riley, took the title.

We look forward to next year’s version of our Fun and Fitness Family Day filled with more exciting challenges that would encourage us to keep fit!
